17 Coats under $100

Generally, I’m not one to wear a coat. Hey, I’m from Texas. Don’t judge me. I hovered between two modes:  It ain’t cold enough out here for a coat and I’m willing to suffer for fashion. Last year I bought a peacoat from Old Navy online. It turned out to be too big, heavy and long. I’m 5′10″ so I was really surprised. I thought it would only hit thigh length. At least the lining was pretty!

I’m on the lookout for affordable coats under $100. I’m in love with pea coats and straight collars. Most of these coats are available in plus-sizes ranging from XL-XXL (except for the Old Navy ones, they run a bit larger). I agree with Dottie when she says it is hard to find a coat for plus-size women that do not look like burlap sacks.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a selection of colorful coats and some plaids kicking it big ups with the regular blacks and blues. I was a little shocked to see that Torrid only had one item that would qualify as a coat for under $100. The major trend this year is double-breasted buttons.

I tried to choose short and long coats. Women under 5′6″ can look drowned in coats that are mid-thigh on 5′10″+ models. So, in the end they wind up having to get them altered or not buying them at all. Has this ever happened to you?

The Steve Madden coat at the end, has a comparable style at Torrid (only it’s more than $100 but still pretty close to cheap enough). Despite being too big for me, my Old Navy coat was really warm. The only problem I had with it besides the size is that because of the size my hands didn’t fit in the pockets correctly.

What coat trends are you absolutely loving this year? And which ones leave you wishing the people who designed the coats actually bothered to wear the coats?
