I hadn’t heard any new news about the Syms buyout of Filene’s Basement since my last post on the subject. The question remained as the stock seemed to dwindle– would they keep the fabulousness that made it “Filene’s?” Would they turn the new locations into Syms stores? Or something in-between?
The Running of the Brides seemed to be on schedule, and according to this Boston Globe article, Marcy Syms had promised to keep hope the Basement alive.
We are totally committed to keeping the Filene’s Basement name and traditions.
Hmmm…
As I shopped the National Press location of Filene’s Basement for the first time in a month, I was heartened to see the racks refilling with merchandise. But what was that I saw? These were not the sale signs I was used to scanning for.
Bargain Alley, eh? Everything $5?
Filene’s usually marks things down by percent, not to any particular dollar amount.
Let’s take a closer look, shall we?
I seeeee…
Is this just a way for Syms to temporarily ditch its extra inventory, or are they transitioning us Filene’s customers to the rule of our new overlords? I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned…

yep, I noticed that last time I was in Filene’s, last week… we’ll see!
Hmm, I am not familiar with Syms, but I know plenty of size 16W women who would be delighted to find a top for $5. :/
Actually, the good part was that I did notice a lot of plus-sizes in that section. FB always had plus sizes (mostly stopping at 24W), but maybe Syms will usher in an even better selection.
