Despite my cheapness… err “frugality,” I am usually all about snapping up the truly fabulous when I see it (I figure I can always return it, and sometimes I do).   At the same time, I’m not averse to giving myself a waiting period of 24-48 hours if I can put things on hold.

But none of this has prevented me from making a few truly tragic purchases– and I’m talking waaaaaay worse than my $7 H&M belt.

Most of them have been pretty forgettable.  Something that never quite fit, but only cost me a ten-spot or so.  Then there was my Susana Monaco top.

I can’t tell you how much I spent on it, but it was a lot for the time– at least $40 or $50– I want to say $70.  What I can tell you?  I bought it as a present to myself on my 18th birthday.  That’s right.  13 years ago.  I’ve had it almost as long as I haven’t.  Longer than I’ve been married, even.  Literally as long as I’ve been a legal adult.

Have I ever– even once– worn it?

Susana Monaco

I think we all know the answer to that one.

Yeah, it’s beige and clingy, but it could almost work for this season’s “nude” fetish.   Unfortunately, it’s covered in shiny scales.  I figure I’ll have to wait at least 5 years for that particular “trend” to come back “in.”

I tried to sell it to Annie Creamcheese– no luck.

If my figgurin’ is correct, that $40 or $50 would be at least $75 today.

I know, I know– let it go.  It’s just the cost of doing business, right?

But, dangit, this is worse than my bridesmaid’s dress– at least I was able to get a few bucks for that!  Commiserate with me.  What purchase do you genuinely regret?  What piece of clothing do you own that shall live in infamy? And why on earth did you buy it in the first place?  Skinny mirrors?

    Yes, I am guilty too….
I bought a black dress with a satin pink detail in the boob area .. with butterflies. I love butterflies.
I bought it in Filene´s in DC. I love Filene´s.
The bottom part of it has pointy peaks so it´s uneven.
This was over 5 years ago, it still has the tag.
Do you think I can exchange it ? Ha! I wish.
It was not expensive unlike your Susana Monaco top. But, it makes me upset – like I lost or something.
I am going home today and and I am taking it to the seamstress! Will let you know how it went.
Oh…. I also have a pair of burgundy Ferragamo loafers that I bought for a 100USD – I have had them for two years and have not worn them because they fit a bit tight.
I will wear them, even if I have to turn them into earrings!

Any paid or uncomfortable shoes. I walk around a store forever in most pair to be sure they are wonderful. Then, I try wearng them in real life and they’re miserable. What happens between the store and my life? Life is too short to wear uncomfortable shoes.

A brown, v-neck, knee-length dress that has a poofy skirt and a big flower print . I thought it was cute and retro, but the bodice never fit right and I can’t breath in it and the poofy skirt makes me look like icing on a cupcake.

Anyway, I would take it in to get altered but the first couple times I wore it out (to summer weddings), I sweated in it (how do I wear dress-shields in a sleeveless dress?) and spilled a drink on it, and the drycleaners couldn’t get it out, even after I complained. So I spent $120 on an ill-fitting dress that was ruined after two uses!

Oh, i forgot to say why I bought it. Well, I needed a dress, and it was the best one I tried on that day… and I thought the bodice issue could be “fixed by a better bra”. Ha! Someday I’ll learn.

I had a dress custom-made. It was like $100 or $120. I got it and it fit me like a dream. When I bought it I was convinced I could wear it anywhere, because it was cotton and I decided that meant it was a sundress. But the cut is a bit fancier (sort of like our Trashy Diva dress) and it turns out, I *can’t* wear it just anywhere. I haven’t worn it once. I tried it on a while ago but it was too small. I don’t know if I’ve chunked up or if it shrunk when I washed it, but either way, I am constantly kicking myself over that one.

Oooh!!! I have several tragic purchases in my history and was just thinking about this the other night.

About four years ago, I bought some stretch (but slightly baggy) pink and green camo pants with calf drawstrings, and in the store, I was like, “These are so edgy! I love them!” and the SECOND I got home, I was like, “…Was I high when I made this decision?” :(

Haven’t worn them in public at all and now the zipper’s broken (and I’m too lazy to fix something I won’t ever wear outside) so they’re just sitting in the storage bin in one of my closets.

I’m trying to figure out if this is worse or better than the regret of not buying something we should have. I guess that’s life, but it still totally chaps my hide!

  8. mlshiira on Friday 14, 2009

Can you try wearing it over a plain black blouse, kinda like a pseudo-vest? Or perhaps even slice it down the front and make it into a real vest? Shiny beige vests are okay over a black-on-black outfit, right? Right??

my latest regret..: Buying 2 pairs of red Hot Chili Jeans that said it was my size, and I didn’t try it on!!! when I got home, blah! it was almost two size smaller than the size on its tag! bummer!
