Where do you go to consistently find the best deals in your closet? That place where a clearance event is guaranteed to fill your drawers with 75% off goodies? ‘Cause this girl is taking applications for a new Bargain BFF.
Until recently, mine was Filene’s Basement, but, well– you know.
I used to get lots of great deals from Ann Taylor Loft via their great sales, coupons and rewards certificates. For the longest time you could buy $50 worth of merchandise and get a certificate to use for $25 off a future $50 purchase. You still can– but only on regular-price merchandise.
The slumping economy means non-bargain-hunters are no longer subsidizing my 70-90% off steals.
Loehmann’s is not a bad contender for my number one spot. Really nice designer clothing, occasional large-cup bras, and I’m an Insider Club Gold member– which means that, in addition to their sales and coupons (right now, clearance merchandise is an additional 25-50% off their lowest marked prices), I get 10% off everyday.
When I lived in New Jersey, I loved Century 21 and Daffy’s in Manhattan, but it’s been a while– are they still any good, New Yorkers?
Neiman Marcus Last Call and Off 5th (and to a lesser extent, Nordstrom Rack) are pretty fabulous, but naturally a bit pricier, and a little bit of a drive for me.
Marshalls/TJ Maxx and Ross have their good points, but some of their merchandise is from hunger and their discounts only rarely make me giddy.
Got any suggestions, beyond the usual suspects? Regional, non-US and online shops are all of interest here. Where do you go for your bestest bargains?

My drug of choice is Nordstrom Rack. I like that it seems as though no one else has discovered their high end but not fancy labeled plus size bargains. You have to catch them during one of their big clearance sales. I routinely get things for $5-$15, such as this cardigan: http://www.flickr.com/photos/34989853@N05/3536236966/in/set-72157615079044621/, this cardigan: http://www.flickr.com/photos/34989853@N05/3611740096/in/set-72157615079044621/, and this one (apparently I just get cardigans there!?): http://www.flickr.com/photos/34989853@N05/3665531144/in/set-72157615079044621/
I also love the clearance racks at Target because it’s often so random that it’s like going to the thrift store, only less smelly.
Oh, wow! I do love Nordstrom Rack for bras, since it’s hard to find 32FFs elsewhere, but I need to be in-the-know so I can plan to be at their clearance sales. IDK– I signed up for their e-mails… Or did I?
Agreed WRT Target. So cheap on clearance! Actually, there is one in the city now– I should check it out from time-to-time.
I’d have to second that for Nordstrom Rack. I found my dream handbag for a steal ($139 down from $595 – and it was my birthday, it’s still kinda a splurge, but I never thought I’d ever own it).
But on other days I’ve found Betsey Johnson marked take an additional 75% off of a markdown price, a $340 Juicy Couture sweater coat for $26…
I’m actually kinda glad that our Rack is up in Danvers, MA and not Boston… if it were any closer to the city, I’d be in trouble.
I love my Filene’s Basement, too.. but even my local one (Arsenal Mall) is crap these days. It’s really sad, looks so empty.
New York & Co. is pretty good for deals. Every now and then they’ll have a section of things marked down to 7.99. I got some beautiful (originally $60) sweaters there, as well as some nice tops that can be dressed up or down. It’s even better when they’re having some kind of special.
I have definitely gotten some steals from New York & Co., although I find that their quality is variable. But their coupons and sales are pretty irresistible, so I’d definitely recommend their accessories, at the very least. I have a necklace and sunglasses from NY&Co that I wear all the time, and they haven’t died yet!
