  • Navy T-Shirt dress from Gap (still available!)– $13.79 (during 40% off clearance sale)
  • Yellow belt from Betsey Johnson via Filene’s Basement– $13.59 with coupon
  • Green seed bead necklace, circa 20th century
  • Vintage turquoise cuff, purchased as part of an antique lot at a furniture auction
  • Strappy tan sandals from BCBGirls via Ross– $14.99

NecklaceTurqSandalsOnce again, I found myself in desperate need of some easy summer dresses, as none of those I wore last summer fit me anymore. Luckily, Gap was offering (and may still be offering) an extra 40% off sale items. I was hoping to find something more like this, with a slightly lower waist, but it’s surprisingly difficult.

Last summer, I wore out a cheap dress from Gap Outlet because the silhouette was decent and the color was pretty. Never mind the fabric that pilled after a single wash, nor the factory-disaster, ridiculously lopsided serged “hem” that I tried to conceal by holding one side of the skirt in my hand like I was perpetually about to step over some kind of 3-foot puddle. I kid you not.

Here’s the dress I’m looking for– can you help me?

  • Sleeveless, but with wide enough straps (or even halter) to hide a bra or, well… maybe sleeves
  • Preferably V-Neck
  • Length from just-above-the-knee to mid-calf (on a girl that’s 5′2″)
  • Light jersey knit with some drape and stretch
  • Preferably solid bright blue, purple, green, red or pink– maybe black or patterned
  • A waist that does not fall directly below my boobs, directly to my hips (in a dropwaist) or requires a belt to define it (I mean, I’d love for the waist to nip in at my bellybutton, where I’m narrowest, but I’d also love some actual magic beans)
  • And oh, yeah– I don’t really do pleats (though a slightly gathered skirt is okay)

That doesn’t sound like such a tall order, does it?

But, well… It seems 95% of what I see out there looks like one of these… Lil’ help?226773_5515_productdetail214x278gp656635-00vliv01on662309-02vliv01

Recently found your blog and am reading through the old entries. I wanted to suggest a dress or two from here:

    They also sell/auction on eBay:

I think you’d look fabulous in a few of their things but the Marilyn halter dress or beater tank dress or the cap sleeve v-neck or the short sleeve mini -or maybe the halter shirred mini?- look most like they might fit your qualifications.

Not as cheap as you’d like I’m sure. I’ve never bought anything from them but I want to!

    J. Crew currently has a gorgeous grey jersey dress with a gored skirt (ie: flares into a circle when you spin)–got mine on sale for $50.

It *is* strapless, but adding straps is one of the easiest fixes in the book with a sewing machine.

Seriously, go check it out–it looks AMAZING on an hourglass figure (I, too, am in possession of the 10″ waist/hip disparity).
