High-waisted skirt, Attempt #1.

Not the best photo, but better than the alternatives, in which I am straight up scowling.
- High-waisted heavyweight jersey pencil skirt with belt– BB Dakota via Filene’s Basement– $16 with coupon
- Black stretch silk blouse– Gap, circa 2004
- Hot blue and silver heels from Boutique 9 of Nine West via Loehmann’s– $18 on clearance (Are you tired of these yet?)
- Chain from some crazy biker store in Chicago’s Bucktown, circa 2005
High-waisted things seemed to be very in last year, but most of them (especially the pants) made me look like I had what can most charitably be described as a front butt. I think it has something to do with my very short (and apparently low?) waist. This whole waist business is beyond me, as some say your waist is where you are narrowest, some say it is at your bellybutton or exactly between your hipbones and ribcage, and some say it is where you naturally “bend” at the side. But for me, these are all the same place, so I am still at a loss. If anyone knows, please share with the group.

I’m not sure that I’m behind the times on the whole high-waisted thing– I’d like to believe instead that waistlines are creeping upward and this skirt will be acceptably fashionable for at least a couple of years. And even if it’s not, well– I love it. So there.

I think a nice high waisted pencil skirt is classic and it looks nice on you. on what not to wear they say your natural waist is wherever you’re most narrow. and I will never be tired of those hot shoes.
You and me both, sister!
[...] it’s a good thing the line between the two is so clear! It’s not like I’ve ever worn an outfit that covered nearly my entire body and had it called “raunchy” on Flickr! Because it’s totally about the outfit [...]

I’m way late to the conversation, I know, but I’m reading back entries of yours and I love this one. Your whole project is seriously making me reassess what I think I “can’t” or “shouldn’t” wear, vs what I actually want to wear and think I look good in. I’m a very similar size and shape to you, and I have those “wait, I think this looks amazing, but I’m “supposed” to stay away from…. so am I actually deluded?” moments that I think you talk about sometimes.
On the waist thing – I think there’s no one definition of waist because it’s an idea used for different things in different contexts – sometimes you’re talking about your narrowest place where you might want to tie something, sometimes you’re talking about the top of a pair of pants, and cutting a pattern according to where on your body it’s going to hit.
High waisted pants are haaard because the crotch serves as another sort of anchor point for your eye and is another dimension that has to both fit right and look right. Actually I don’t think I’ve ever seen them look quite right on anyone. A skirt gives you much more room to define your own proportions and is easier to fit too.
It’s interesting to me though that you say all those definitions of waist are the same place on you, because I was actually just thinking about the way our bodies differ (given that I think they’re very similar), and now I think our waists are in different places! My waist is also short, but my narrowest part is at the bottom of my ribcage, and my belly button is several inches below and even below where my hips start. Infinite variety, huh? Oh, and I hope it goes without saying that this skirt is stunning on you!
